Finding and adding new keywords to your sponsored product campaigns each week can be a tedious and confusing task, save time and drive demand by automatically adding top performing search terms as new keywords each week.
How does Keyword Automation Work?
Every week, we will evaluate all new keywords recommendations against the rules you’ve defined within the settings. We will only take action on these keywords if we can confidently route to the right target ad group.
If we're unable to confidently identify the ad group or you're not running a corresponding manual campaign, these keyword recommendations, referred to "overflow actions" will remain in keyword actions for the user to take action on.
How do I turn on Keyword Automation?
You can enable keyword automation within our new 'settings' tab on the navigation bar in the bottom left hand corner. Toggle on 'add new keywords automatically', select the metrics you'd like to use to define the rules for automation (i.e. conversions, ACoS, clicks), edit the values as you see fit and hit save!
These rules will be applied to all campaigns within Flywheel.
What are the default settings for taking Keyword Automation?
The default settings in Flywheel are representative of industry standards and are intended to improve overall advertising performance if implemented.
Flywheel defaults to:
Conversions greater than 1
ACoS less than 50%
Clicks greater than 1
We also allow you to automatically add exact match negative keywords in automatic campaigns when you select Auto Negate Keywords 🎉
All rules follow an AND relationship, meaning the keyword must meet all of these rules in order to be added to the manual campaign. You have the ability to customize these settings based on your advertising goals. Learn more about Keyword Automation Default Values and how to customize rules based on your goals.
When does Keyword Automation occur?
When you turn the feature on, we will immediately start adding keywords, regardless of whether today is your set keyword action sync day.
Keyword Automation will occur on the day of your weekly keyword action sync, as stated within the settings. You can have your keyword sync day changed upon request.
What happens if I make changes my settings/rules?
If you make changes to the rules or settings, upon saving, we will take action right away based on the new rules.
How do I know what actions were taken on my behalf?
You can use the weekly performance email as an indicator that keyword automation has occurred for the week. To see a list of the changes made on your behalf, refer to the Change History which can be accessed from the settings page or on the navigation bar within Advertising.
Be sure to review both 'Keywords from Auto' and 'Keywords from Manual' to review all changes. You can refine your search using 'filter by campaign' to hone in on specific campaigns.
Reminder: We only display the 200 most recent results, if you may have more than 200 changes per tab, please request this list to be exported by our expert support team.
How does Flywheel select the right ad group?
Keyword automation follows the same logic as our Instant Link functionality. Ad groups are selected based on:
SKU overlap between the source and target ad group
Naming convention overlap between the source and target ad group (mirrored structure)
Search Term Tagging or Shopper Segmentation
If an instant link already exists, we will select the instant link ad group. If there is no instant link, but you have previously selected an ad group link, the keyword will be added to that previously selected target ad group.
If we cannot identify which ad group it should be added to, there will be no action taken and the keyword will remain on the keyword actions page, even if the keyword's performance meets the pre-defined rules.
What improves the likelihood that a keyword successfully moving to an ad group?
You will reduce your chances of having overflow actions - keywords that met the performance criteria but we were unable to identify the target ad group - if you:
Ensure campaign structure is set up correctly: using mirrored campaign structure with consistent naming convention and amount of sku overlap
Adding tags to search terms if you're using audience-based campaign structure
Enable instant linking and taking keyword actions using the default values prior to turning on automation
